Umm, not dirty pool.
The only person involved in the incident, producer Nicolas Chartier, did not know the rules when he sent the mass mailings and was banned from attending the ceremonies accordingly. They didn't just ban him because he was playing dirty. They banned him because he broke the rules. People who get a speeding ticket don't get out of it, just because they don't know what the posted speed limit is. If you read up on it, it really wasn't a big deal and he still gets his statue. I don't know where you heard that the movie is two years old. It was first released in Venice Film Festival in Sept. '08. It wasn't released in the US until March '09, at SXSW. When it comes to films, I pay no attention to the mainstream press. Much like you don't when it comes to politics. The list of awards for that film go all the way back to '08. And it has won well over 100 awards since its release. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0887912/awards And as I say to others, don't listen to what others tell you to believe. Go see it for yourself, then make up your mind. It's makes no sense to pan a movie you haven't watched. |

Hurt locker was my favorite movie this last year and I really wanted it to win. But I thought Avatar was just too big to be ignored. It's great when you feel they got it right. Bullock by far gave one of the best speeches I've ever heard at the oscars. I have't seen precious, but the clips they showed of the star, showed that she may have deserved it more than bullock. I'm not disappointed though. And Bridges totally deserved his award. I am surprised by the writing winners, but glad the ones that won, won. I thought the show was a liitle boring and I'm not crazy about the 5 people coming out and talking about the nominees. I didn't see the first hour of the show so I can't comment on Martin and Baldwin's performance, but what I saw was pretty good. On other message boards they say they didn't perform the nominated songs, that'ts strange. Also, I'm not sure what to think about the way they did best score with the dancers. That seemed weird.
Thanks for joining in the discussion.

The producer didn't know the rules but I don't think it affected the outcome other than it probably cost them votes from winning by a bigger margin. The academy frowns on that sort of thing.
I haven't seen precious but the Academy is not known for giving younger stars oscars and sometimes they have to take care of some of the older boys and girls so to speak. I always felt that James Dean deserved an oscar for East of Eden and also Giant in Best Supporting Actor but they listed him as among the stars so he was not eligible under the unfortunate rules to be nominated in the best supporting role. That was unfortunate and a terrible rule that has been corrected. Hookem is right. It doesn't matter when a movie was actually made but when it was released in the USA. I haven't seen the Hurt Locker but those who have told me it was great. I have seen Avatar and it was magnificient. It ran away with making the most money so I am sure they are crying all the way to the bank for not winning more oscars. ![]() |

Avatar getting basically shutout was somewhat of a surprise. I wonder if Cameron's rep had anything to do with that. He is not well liked around Hollywood.
Having his ex sitting right in front of him and winning the two major awards had to stick in his craw, as well. |

I, for one, was glad that Dances with Smurfs got shutout. It's one thing for an American to write a critical commentary about America, but that movie didn't sit well with me knowing that it was a Canadian just taking a huge dump on American past and current policies. Kinda like I can complain about my mom, but nobody else better talk about my momma. It was interesting to me that Cameron chose James Horner to write the score, because just like Avatar was a a shiny rip-off of so many other movies, all Horner seems to do is copy from Gustav Holst. I can't argue that it wasn't fun to look at, though, and the visual aspect of the movie rightfully got rewarded.

I have to agree on Avatar. That movie was boring as hell. The special effects were great, but the movie itself left a lot to be desired.

Considering how much the movie made there are a lot of movie fans that must not agree with you. Big Box Office Revenue > Oscar. ![]() |

Apparently, one of my guesses about Avatar was right.
http://oscars.movies.yahoo.com/blog/...wards-world?nc The Academy wants to see actors act, not computer generated characters. On another note, I though Ben Stiller, dressed as a Na'vi, was hilarious. Quote:
