Rick Barnes
Is the clock ticking on Barnes? I know, I know. He has won a lot of games here. However, it's pretty apparent he is not a top flight x's and o's coach. Will there be any pressure to begin thinking about a change? There are at least 4 coaches in the Big 12 better than Barnes. Personally I think we need an upgrade. I'm afraid the aura for recruiting is going to take a huge hit after this year's debacle.
Thoughts? |

Bevo,
I've wondered the same thing; however, he is a lights-out recruiter, and a great defensive coach. 2 of 3 ain't bad. He isn't going anywhere, at least not yet. |

Let's see, you lost Ward very early on. That hurt. You've lost Balbay. That hurt on the defensive end. I don't think it's Barnes. It may be more of a chemistry issue.

Slot is right, in one way; it's chemistry, but I don't think losing either player was the problem. The three freshmen have each got their liabilities; James & Johnson play 100% every game; Mason is pretty much one-dimensional; & I have no idea why Wangmene, Lucas, or Hill ever get off the bench. Correct me if I'm wrong, Bevo, but you are talking about Barnes' offensive problems, right? |

I concur, Bevo. However, I really like Barnes for the most part. He's tough. But he isn't adaptable. One thing is perfectly clear about this year's team: it is going nowhere fast. He needs to make some changes. The changes may not work, but standing pat, hoping one or two of the freshmen figure it out is a disservice to the rest of the team. Try something different. Play some zone; some zone press; try running some motion on offense. Try something, for pete's sake. Looking befuddled on the sideline is kinda sad.
Is it just me, or does it seem like we almost never get the loose balls? I doubt the numbers are as bad as I think, but are we getting killed on the boards? Let's see--we beat OU Monday, then lose to Baylor Saturday; then lose in 1st or 2nd round of tourney. Get a 8 seed in the NCAAs, and lose on the first weekend. I think losing Ward hurt. I agree with Gottlieb about Balbay, though. He was such a liability at the offensive end that losing him might help. How can you play basketball all your life, get a schollie to UT and not be able to shoot the basketball? |

I would think that if you get rid of Barnes after all he's done of late you would risk having a hard time replacing him with a better coach.

Yes, but let's face it, we don't really have huge expectations for the basketball team...we take what we can get, wedged in there between football and baseball season. |

I think that the loss of Varez Ward has had much more impact on this team than we can imagine. I still hold out hope that we'll find some spark before or during the conferece tournament. We play good enough defense to go a long way in the NCAA tournament, and there is no "great" team this year. |

Mossy, mostly. However, this defense has not been great. Keep in mind that earlier this week we were the leading scoring team in the Bg 12. Scary. Considering that, I'd say our defense has been pretty miserable. Our help side D is inconsistent. Sometimes I wonder if J'Covan Brown has ever seen a screen before. That said, I'd say that its O and D that have me sleepless in Buda right now! ![]() Chemistry? Hmmmm..I'd say that coaching has a ton to do with that as well. We played all year without Ward and played well early. That is a weak excuse Slot. As for Balbay, I agree. He is a huge offensive liability. Would he EVER see the floor with someone like Augustine on campus? Nope. IMO, Barnes has done a lousy job recruiting a point guard ..a QB..and that is an awful mistake. |
