Oscars 2010
OK, who is going to win the Oscars this year? Here are my picks for some major trophies. I usually don't do well with those foreign and small documentary films, things like that. That's usually when I lose the most points with a Who's Going to Win the Oscars contest.
Best Picture: Avatar, not the best story but boy did they put everything and the kitchen sink into it. Other possible: The Hurt Locker. Best Actor: Jeff Bridges. Best Actress: Sandra Bullock. I have started to see where many people think that Meryl Streep will win. I think Streep was incredible in Julie and Julia, but the Oscars often are about giving someone the trophy because of what they've done in the past. I will say that Bullock was very good. Best Supporting Actor: Christoph Waltz. If there was a sure thing, this would be it. Best Supporting Actress: Probably Mo'nique, though I haven't seen this. But they say her performance is incredible. That is the thing about Supporting Roles, they are usually the best performances of the year. Best Director: Kathryn Bigelow. Though I really think that James Cameron deserves this because of the massive incredible job he did pulling Avatar together - Bigelow winning will satisfy all kinds of past unfairness to women in this spot. Plus, The Hurt Locker was a great movie and well done. Best Animated Film: Up, of course. This was one of the best movies I saw all year and so well made. If you have the movie, I would recommend you watch the making-of-behind-the-scenes parts. Best Original Screenplay: Inglorious Basterds. Quentin Tarantino is brilliant, and ranks right up there with the Coen Brothers for me. (Can't wait for the Coen's remake of True Grit.) Best Adapted Screenplay: Up in the Air. I really, really liked this movie and this will give Jason Reitman a well deserved reward. Original Score: Up. Original Song: The Weary Kind, from Crazy Heart. I have a feeling this will be one of those performances like when Nashville's "I'm Easy" won. Bingham will probably come out by himself with a guitar and sing the song, after a lot of big stage presentations of the other songs. And then he'll win. Truthfully, this was a weak catagory, but the song was still good. That's it for me. Here's a complete list: http://www.moviefone.com/oscars-acad...nominee-winner

I'm disappointed that Up didn't win best picture. It would really have said something about the Academy to reward that film.
I enjoyed the show. Steve Martin and Alec Baldwin would keep the co-host roles as long as they want them.

Sorry I wasn't on before and saw your thread. I wasn't surprised. I didn't think they would give it to Avatar because the academy isn't into that sort of thing but winning at the box office is much more important anyway. I haven't seen The Hurt Locker but I understand it is a great movie. I saw the pattern of how it was going early though so I expected The Hurt Locker to win.

Glad to see Hurt locker win. As well as Jeff Bridges and Sandra Bullock.
Avatar was a fun movie to watch, however, the plot was really nothing new. It was definitely the most visually stunning movie I have ever seen, but the story was predictable.

Having seen eight of the ten Best Picture nominees, the Academy made the right choice. The Hurt Locker was probably the most powerful film I've seen in a long time.
Avatar was great, but I think the fact that it was practically all done through CGI hurt it. Up was a wonderful film, but I wouldn't put it on the level of most of the nominees. And it did win Best Animated Film. I loved Inglourious Basterds, but was kind of surprised when it was first nominated. The Academy tends to shy away from over-the-top stuff like that. I think Precious was the only film that came close to matching The Hurt Locker. The actor races were so tight, for me, it was hard to pick a favorite. I loved Invictus, and seeing Damon and Freeman win would have been appropriate. But Waltz was completely deserving, as the screwy Nazi. I haven't seen Crazy Heart, so couldn't comment on Bridges' win. I think Sidibe deserved the nod over Bullock, but that might just be me having trouble with The Blindside and its multiple inaccuracies. Oh, and Penelope Cruz is a hottie. ![]() |

The consensus on this movie from folks that have been to Iraq seems to be that it borders on parody. Soldiers and embeds alike have not liked it. For a movie to be good or powerful in spite of that would be tough. Up was as imaginative as any movie I've ever seen. It was life affirming, funny, sad and intelligent.

I have three buddies who loved it and said it was pretty spot on. Also, the bomb tech who is now suing over it (claims it's his story) says the same, as far as the basics go. I read some of the complaints and for the most part those complaints are about how the EOD soldiers do their jobs. They say it's not that dramatic.
Mark Boal, who wrote the movie, puts it best - http://www.chicagotribune.com/entert...0,143762.story Quote:
Another problem I have with these complaints is that they are just now beginning. We heard nothing back during the summer, when the film was released. Even the soldier who has filed the lawsuit has said he intentionally waited until the Oscar votes were done, so it wouldn't affect the outcome, thereby allowing the film to make more money, so he could get more money. |

I think you didn't hear complaints before because no one that would complain expected the movie to be taken seriously before. Anyway, the movie is 2 years old. Does the fact that it got no mainstream press praising it when it was made mean it's not good now?

BTW, there was some major dirty pool played by the Hurt Locker folks to get this Oscar. Mass mailings to the voters (which are against the rules). It was so bad the financier of the movie wasn't allowed in the theater.
